Belgium Embassy to Belgian Associations: Don’t Send Volunteers to Morocco

The Belgian Embassy in Morocco issued a warning to its charity organizations not to send volunteers to Morocco after a teacher called on “slaughtering them” for dressing “indecently”.

Earlier this week, Moroccan Facebook users shared the photos of young Belgian female volunteers surfacing the roads of the village of Adarnoman in the area of Taroudant in the southeast of Morocco. Later, the comment of a teacher from the north of Morocco inciting the killing of the volunteers for not dressing properly surfaced on social media. The Moroccan authorities then announced his arrest for the comments.

According to the Arabic-speaking news source Alyaoum24, The Belgian embassy in Morocco got in touch with the association in question to check if the volunteers were safe, and confirmed that they were. However, the association explained that they were worried that the person who threatened them might be in the area.

The Belgian embassy then warned its associations not to send any more volunteers to Morocco. The spokeswoman of the association stated that she received the warning and that her association would abide by it.

The Belgian embassy also granted the volunteers a chance to return to their countries and 3 of them have decided to leave on Saturday 10th
